Since 2006, high school students and their science teacher George Nanoski have created three habitat spaces—Coastal Sage Scrub/Chaparral, Mojave/Sonoran Deserts, and a Vernal Pool Complex—serving as outdoor ecological laboratories for students. “These habitats attract wildlife, allow for observation of species interactions, and educate students, staff, and the public about native plant uses and California water issues,” says Nanoski. “They are a re-wilding of the urban landscape; an attempt to get back, in some small sense, the immense biological diversity we have lost.”
